Greening the garage roof - step by step instructions

If you want to green your garage roof, you don't have to be a big gardener. This is actually very easy and has many advantages. It is best to just follow our instructions.

Green roofs can also be “colorful”

Flat roofs can be found in this country mainly in commercial buildings, old bungalows or typical prefabricated buildings from a bygone era. In the home with garden, it is primarily the garage and carport that have a flat roof. This is ideal for subsequent greening.

The roofs of garages and carports are usually not particularly beautiful to look at. Viewed from the ground level, this may not be a major issue, but from an elevated position on the first or second floor value of a residential building, the view of an unsightly, gray surface made of roofing felt is usually revealed.

More and more owners are currently discovering this bare and not really beautiful-looking area, if not as a usable area, then at least as an ornamental area with which a whole lot can be done. Depending on the load capacity and condition of the vehicle parking space, a green area can be created on it, which not only looks good, but also has a useful, above all ecological benefit.

Green roofs have many advantages

Plant a bed on the roof of your shelter or let a wild meadow run free, then this has several advantages:

»Advantage No. 1 - city climate is improved:

The greening works in small parts e.g. to improve the urban climate. Because plants are known to filter dust and pollutants from the air, and they also produce oxygen, which we humans and animals need to breathe. If every flat roof in a city were green, there would be no pollution from smog or fine dust in the air.

»Advantage No. 2 - Habitat for plants and animals is created:

On the other hand, through the greening you create a habitat for plants and small animals that was lost through the foundation of your garage.

»Advantage No. 3 - Longevity of the garage is improved:

A green roof also improves the longevity of your garage, since UV rays are absorbed and do not directly hit the building material. At the same time, the shelter heats up much less strongly even in blazing sun.

»Advantage No. 4 - drainage systems are relieved:

Since an overgrown garage roof also absorbs water and allows it to evaporate again, you relieve the urban drainage systems. For this reason, many municipalities also reward residents who opt for green roofing with reduced sewage fees.

Turn the roof into a garden - step by step instructions

If you have now decided to green your garage roof, then you should know that it does not matter in principle whether it is an old or new construction, an electric garage door is present or whether it is even a carport acts that is open on all sides. The way of greening is the same for every roof. It is best to do the following:

Step 1:

First you have to clean the roof surface thoroughly.

Step 2:

When greening the garage roof, you now have to work layer by layer. In total, you have to create 4 layers in this step.

  • First layer:
First of all you have to lay out a protective film, which serves as a seal. Here, pond liner is particularly suitable, which should protrude at the edges of the roof.
  • Second layer:
Now the drainage layer follows. This is important for the water supply to the plants and also prevents the roots from getting through the bottom film.
  • Third layer:
The third layer should consist of a filter fleece. This provides more hold and also ensures nutrient balance.
  • Fourth shift:
Finally, there is the substrate layer, which consists of turf soil and into which you can later plant the plants. You have to make sure that you build up the layer on the roof edges a little or that you give the surface a pebble-like appearance.

Step 3:

Once the substrate layer has been laid out, you can now plant lawn seeds and plant flowers. It is best to rely on easy-care and above all robust plants.

And then it's time to wait. After a few weeks and months you will already have a blooming garage roof that is nice to look at and does not require regular maintenance.
